How/When did I get involved in CrossFit?
I first got involved in CrossFit due to the friendship of Mr. Cole Simon. Cole and I became fast friends through the theatre world and at that time he was actively involved in CrossFit but not yet at a coaching level. Cole started coaching a few of his close friends a little over a year ago and then got a coaching job at Primary. I was brought in as the “canary” as Cole so affectionately named me to help test the programming before the athletes did the WOD’s to see if any modifications needed to be made. Needless to say, I got hooked and have been at Primary just about a year now!
Do you remember your first workout? How was it?
There have been a lot of workouts, but I remember one of the first ones I ever did was a Barbell Complex of 15 Deadlifts, 12 Front Squats, 9 Push Press, and 6 Overhead Squats for 3 rounds I think. Each round descending in weight I believe. I don’t think I changed the weight even once and went super light ha! I remember it being very challenging especially the Overhead Squat. I may have fallen on my ass a few times and vocalized a bit in frustration, but I kept going!
Favorite lift and WOD?
That’s a great question…my favorite lift would probably be Back Squat or maybe Front Squat. I like my squats. I really enjoy WOD’s that involve engine work or running, sometimes burpees haha. Oh, I also have enjoyed WOD’s that test split times as an extra challenge to push myself to maintain my previous time. How could I forget my girl, EMOM? I do love a good EMOM. It’s a great way to break down a movement.
What about your least favorite?
Hmmm…I would say anything with Toes to Bar or a lot of hanging from the bar. My hands used to tear all. the. time. I also acknowledge that sometimes my least favorite WOD’s are because I didn’t end up scaling the weight properly and struggle my way through.
What are you fitness/health goals?
I want abs lol! I would like to get a Muscle Up, continue working on a handstand walk, I also want to work on strict strength when it comes to Hand Stand Push Ups, Pull ups, etc. I’d like to continue to work on gymnastic movements.
Is there a specific diet or nutritional habit that helps you with your goals?
I definitely have enjoyed tracking my Macros and have found that helps with my overall fitness and health goals.
What motivates you?
I am motivated by the support of the Primary community for sure. I am also motivated by the incredibly strong athletes that work out at Primary who inspire me day in and day out.
Do you have any advice for new members?
Comparison is a thief of joy. Don’t get sucked into comparing yourself to any one else at the gym. Now, that is easier said than done. Every day you show up and dig deep inside yourself is a victory and know that you will always be supported in your efforts.
What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
As I mentioned, I want a Muscle Up and to be able to do 5 strict pull ups and 5 strict hand stand push ups.
What was your favorite WOD in the Open? Least favorite?
My favorite WOD in the Open was 19.1. Wall Balls and Row Calories. It was the first WOD of the Open and the adrenaline was flowing. Definitely felt good. My least favorite WOD was probably 19.2. Stringing together TTB was challenging and I think my hands tore which is never fun.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I’m just grateful for Ramon, Stephanie, Cole, Troy, Luz and every athlete at Primary for creating a community that supports each other.
