How/when did you get involved in CrossFit?
I started CrossFit in October 2018. It had been something I was looking into for awhile, and like many people, had heard about the negatives of CrossFit, which delayed me actually starting. Once I started, I was immediately hooked, it is the perfect mix of competition and community; the CrossFit community is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, the positivity that exudes from everyone is awesome.
Do you remember your first workout? How was it?
It is one that will be hard to forget, it was the Filthy Fifty, and it was not pretty. I woke up the next morning, and could barely walk, that’s when I thought…ehh…I’m good, I think one class is enough. I am VERY surprised that I didn’t meet Pukie after this WOD; it didn’t take me very long to finally check that Pukie box on Btwb, I’ve had my fair share. Haha.
Favorite lift and WOD?
I would say my favorite lifts would be the Power Clean (still trying to figure out the whole squat clean thing,) Bench Press, and Deadliftsince. I don’t know if I have a favorite WOD, I’ve been a fan of some of the WODs/Partner WODs that Cole has programmed that past month or so.
What about your least favorite?
This is the easiest question I’ve ever been asked, anything that has a Thruster and/or Burpee in it, makes me want to throw a weight through the window; but I will say that these movements do help my mental toughness, as I feel like they are more of a mental workout for me, then a physical one…But hey, good thing we haven’t had to do any burpees this past month, huh?
What are your fitness/health goals?
This is a great question; and I would say overall it is to push my limit, I have never felt better since starting CrossFIt, having played basketball my entire life, through college, competing is something that I’ve always loved to do, and I really want to get into competing more, specifically in team competitions. On the other hand, I want to become more efficient at the movements that I’m not very efficient at, and there are plenty of those. On Btwb, I would like to get into the 80th Percentile, and use that as a measurable to keep growing. One thing I have been thinking about doing the past couple months is getting my CF-L1, so I plan on completely an L1 course by the end of the year.
Is there a specific diet or nutritional habit that helps you with your goals?
I have sat down with Cole and gone over my Macros, to get a better idea of how much I actually need to be eating to get what I want out of my body, but I don’t count my Macros. When I’m hungry, I eat, I just watch what I eat, and stay away from the things that I know won’t help me get where I want to go, but on the other hand, I still definitely love indulging into a cheat day every week, where there are no rules!
What motivates you?
I feel like it is mostly the internal motivation to be the best I can be, to really find out how far I can push my body to be the best at whatever I might be doing in life, in this case CrossFit. Obviously you always want to make your family/friends proud, and that can be a piece of motivation, and it absolutely is for me, as well, but that’s why internal motivation is more of a piece of mine, because I have been blessed with an unbelievable support system of family/friends, and I know that if I accomplish what I set out to do, or even if I don’t, that my family/friends will be proud of what I did.
Do you have any advice for new members?
My advice would be to come in with an open mind, and to be coachable. In my opinion, CrossFit really is the best atmosphere for people to get into fitness, especially at Primary, with it being such a supportive community, but also can be a competitive once, because that friendly competition will help push you to get where you want to be. I also thought Laura had a great answer to this question last month, and that is don’t compare yourself to anyone except yourself and your goals, everyone has different goals, and the timeline in which fulfilling those goals are different, and comparing yourself can act as a mental block. It’s cliche, but if you go in, try your best, and have fun, you will actually enjoy the journey you’re on.
What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
On top of everything I listed above in the health/fitness goals, I just want to continue to grow as a person.
Anything else you’d like to add?
I would like to say thank you to everyone, finding Primary has been a blessing and has helped me grow not just as an athlete, but as a person. It has been an unbelievable experience, and when I do move to Austin, I know exactly what to look for in a CrossFit community, if it is similar to what I experienced here, I know it is the one for me. I will miss Primary, the only thing I won’t miss is the weather, I will not miss winter, that is for certain.
