How/when did you get involved in CrossFit?
I joined Primary this past March , part of the 6-week challenge, failed but that didn’t stop me. I needed a jolt of fitness when it came to my health, and the journey I was on trying to figure out what was happening with my body. Trying to make it a short story — I deal with insulin resistance due to some family history/PCOS and caused me to gain weight very rapidly in the last 3 years. Prior to those 3 years, I was significantly slimmer and very active, played soccer in high school and some of college, did biking and swimming (both leisurely). Then I got an office job where I had to drive for my commute, I wasn’t as active, and the weight piled on because of the insulin resistance. There was also my cholesterol just on the brink of being what is considered “high”, elevated blood pressure and overall fatigue. Needless to say, my active years masked my problems. Finally found a doctor who diagnosed me correctly, got me on the right medication and actually recommended CrossFit as she did it herself. I was noticing the ads on Facebook from Primary at the time, and here I am annoying you guys on almost a day to day basis.
Do you remember your first workout? How was it?
Honestly, my first class was a beginner’s class, I believe with tons of KB swings and doing handstand holds against the wall. I just remember being sore the next day and buying out Walgreens of their Icy Hot. One of the first actual workouts/WODs that sticks to my mind to this day was 19.3. I wasn’t aware of the CrossFit open happening, nor Friday Night Lights being a thing. I showed up that Friday night after 19.3 was announced, at the last heat, and my ass was pretty much handed to me on a platter. Those weighted lunges and step ups humbled me to say the least. Couldn’t feel my legs for the weekend that followed.
How have you grown in that time — health, body, mind, etc.?
I like to say I have. The weight loss of about 25-30lbs (fluctuates a lot due to my condition) is more than I could ask for. Mind for sure, I was very down in the dumps these last few years and finally being on the forefront of chipping away at what was wrong with my health has boosted my mood entirely.
Favorite lift and WOD?
So hard to answer. I like anything with a barbell honestly. Front/back squats (the most), deadlifts, cleans/jerks, snatches and Turkish get ups. I do take a liking to the longer WODs and chippers, I enjoy feeling out how much I can test and push myself, especially endurance wise. Two hero WODs come to mind – 343 and The 7. Then I also liked the Death By front squats WOD we did some time ago in the summer, and another spicy one Cole programmed during the summer where it was 2 rounds for time: 100 DU/50 OHS/35 pull ups/1 mile run. Open workouts I enjoyed were 20.2, 20.3 and 20.4.
Honestly, good luck to Cole programming my AOTM WOD, I’m just all over the damn place. Which sums me up basically. I’ll help you out with the name, at least — should just be called “Do A Bunch of This Shit for Time”. (whatever the “shit” may be). You’re welcome.🤣
What about your least favorite?
This one is hard, because I don’t despise much. I’ll name my weakest movements in a WOD which are overhead squats and thrusters. I can go heavy on these when it comes to testing strength, but in a WOD, these really slow me down.
What are your fitness/health goals?
Weight loss primarily as still have a lot to go, but I am the oldest of 4 siblings and basically the second mom in my family. I have a baby sister who is just 10 years old and tons of baby nieces and nephews. I want to be that fun sister and aunt and keep up with them as much as I can through the years.
Is there a specific diet or nutritional habit that helps you with your goals?
Laying off the sugar, dairy and most white carbs is crucial to me and the insulin resistance. It’s been hard, chocolate and cheeses are a weakness of mine. Other than that, GF options as of late, a Mediterranean diet due to my culture/heritage and laying off red meats. Relying more on seafood and poultry. I want to try and eventually dwindle off animal-based proteins due to a bunch of studies I’ve read and watched. That will be another journey once my first one gets towards the finish line.
What motivates you?
My baby sister, the weight coming off and noticing my body take on things again I used to do in my very active years.
Do you have any advice for new members?
It is intimidating when you first start, won’t lie about that but just remember everything is scaled to YOU and your capabilities; especially in the beginning. What will be fascinating, as it was to me, is to see your capabilities grow as you go along daily, weekly and monthly as it all passes. There is nothing more motivational than that outside of whatever your personal reasons may be, at least in my opinion.
What do you hope to achieve in the coming year?
Any of the elite movements, honestly. To paraphrase my amazing peer and the queen, Ivy, I will die happy when I get that pull up finally. Gonna try on double unders eventually, too.
Anything else you’d like to add?
Jk! Thank you so much for the support and choosing me for AOTM. I am not worthy, truly.
Especially when introverted me dreads pictures, attention and “spotlight”. But seriously, the staff and everyone who comes here is amazing. Wouldn’t be the same without any of you all. THANK YOU SO MUCH. ❤🙈
